I thought I’d share a few quick thoughts after the first day of my first NaNoWriMo. I’m not planning to do daily updates on this (although I may surprise you/me!) – mainly as it can be difficult to turn the writing process into an interesting spectator sport, but also because I’m writing the third book in a series, the second of which hasn’t been released yet (see yesterday’s update for more on this). As a result I can’t go into too much detail on what I’m writing without letting rip with some huge spoilers and I wouldn’t want to do that to you…! 😉

I finished outlining the story beats for Beyond the Aether yesterday, so was all set to get rolling with pounding the keys in anger first thing.

Today kicked off with a 4am start – not intentionally because I was writing or anything, but because I’ve suddenly come down with man-flu, and my son still hasn’t adjusted to the clocks going back…

Not the ideal preparation, but after the rugrats had been bundled into school I knuckled down to writing – with regular interruptions from the painters, electricians, gardener, postie… it’s been one of those days!

So I’m pretty chuffed that I managed to churn out 5,669 words – taking me to mid-way through chapter 3. I’m hopeful that this has been a bad day and I can keep the momentum going once things are more settled – watch this space!

In terms of my target for the month, you “win” NaNoWriMo by hitting 50,000 words by the end of the month. However, my books tend to be over double that: The Infernal Aether weighed in at 113,000 words all-in, while the current draft of the sequel The Demon Inside is 98,000 words and will probably be at least 105,000 by the time it is published. As a result my first milestone is 50,000 words, but I’m giving myself a stretch target of the full first draft novel by 30 November – which in reality means 90,000-100,000 words.

There – I’ve committed to it in writing – no getting away from that now!

If you’re doing NaNoWriMo this year, do let me know how you’re getting on – would love to hear from you. I’ll be back in a few days with more updatey sort of stuff – I’m off now to nurse my man-flu with a glass of wine and the latest Walking Dead…
